British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

British Values

The different British Values are embedded and taught across our PSHE programme Jigsaw. The children gain an awareness and understanding of British values enabling them to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect other, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen.

British Values in JIGSAW

Each week classes participate in Picture News Class assemblies. Increasingly these are led by children who have undergone training through Picture News.

These assemblies explore current world wide issues and new events, allowing the children time to reflect and respond. Each news story supports class teachers in making British Values relevant and meaningful and to develop links between personal, school and community values.
