Intent

At Meavy C of E Primary School, we have chosen to teach PSHE through the Jigsaw scheme of work. This scheme fulfils all the requirements for the statutory Relationships and Health Education curriculum, as announced by the Department for Education in England in 2019, for full implementation from September 2020. Jigsaw goes even further than this and provides a spiral, progressive and comprehensive PSHE Programme in which the statutory elements sit and are embraced. The skills taught in PSHE enable pupils to develop the skills they need to flourish in the wider curriculum and in life as a whole. PSHE helps pupils to understand their own personal value, and how as individuals, they fit into and contribute to the world. PSHE helps to develop emotional literacy, build resilience and support mental and physical wellbeing, in turn supporting emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

PSHE in Meavy C of E Primary School will:

• Develop the knowledge, skills and attributes pupils need to manage their lives, now and in the future.

• Help pupils stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

• Help pupils to achieve academic potential and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

Implementation

To ensure a depth and accuracy of learning which builds upon prior learning, all classes undertake weekly PSHE lessons which follow Jigsaw 3- 11, a fully planned and spiralling/progressive PSHE scheme. Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, brings together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. A lesson a week, with the teaching resources included, helps teachers to focus on tailoring the lessons to their children’s needs and to enjoy building the relationship with their class, getting to know them better as unique human beings. Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time.

There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from the start of each academic year:

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Each piece has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning (purple) and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development (green).

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident in school life as a whole - in pupils’ attitudes to learning and their respect, care and understanding for each other. By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our PSHE programme can tackle barriers to learning and help to raise aspirations for all pupils. By the time they leave our school, PSHE education enables our learners to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our curriculum, which is centred around the whole-school Jigsaw scheme, allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Our curriculum raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness, and prepares children for the wider world and their position in it.

British Values

The different British Values are embedded and taught across Jigsaw. The children gain an awareness and understanding of British values enabling them to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect other, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen.

British Values in Jigsaw

Each week classes participate in Picture News Class assemblies. Increasingly these are led by children who have undergone training through Picture News.

These assemblies explore current world wide issues and new events, allowing the children time to reflect and respond. Each news story supports class teachers in making British Values relevant and meaningful and to develop links between personal, school and community values.
