Intent

The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities; and lead healthy, active lives.

At Meavy, we cultivate a love of being active, not just in PE lessons, but at playtimes and lunchtimes, in after-school clubs, and beyond school in local clubs and informal family activity. We want our children to stay healthy and active, not just at school but throughout their lives. We provide a wide range of equipment to help children of differing ages and interests choose to play actively.

We intend to provide a curriculum that inspires all children to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities and competitive sport. We aim to give all children the opportunity during their time at Meavy to participate in a range of inter-school activities and festivals, and to prepare them so that these are positive and inspiring. We participate in a large number of events organised by OCRA, our local school sports organising association. We ensure that girls are given the same opportunities as boys to achieve well and succeed at sports and PE, through mixed teams with equal representation and single gender teams when this is appropriate.

As well as developing physical skills, and understanding of sports and activities, we also aim to develop children’s personal skills such as resilience, co-operation, trust and integrity.

Implementation

Our Curriculum has been designed for our small school considering the combination of cohorts and classes, the relatively larger outdoor PE spaces we have, the likely weather patterns, and our intention to offer every child the opportunity to participate in intra-school sport and every child in Y4 upwards the opportunity to participate in inter-school competitions.

From Reception to Year 3, in each term a child will be taught two sequential units in the same area, such as FS racket skills followed by Y1 racket skills, so that they make 2 years progress in one area in a whole term, rather than one years’ progress in a half-term unit.

From year 4 onwards we use a spiral approach, so that the same area is taught to all cohorts in their classes in the same half-term, but the teachers assess which year group unit best fits the children in their class, making adaptations for those groups that may need consolidation of earlier work, or deepening of their learning. This allows us to match up the skills being taught with events and competitions throughout the year so that all children are prepared for inter-school competitions and events, and wherever possible all children are given the opportunity to take part in inter-school competitions and events.

How the skills progress from one unit to the next can be seen in the two Progression of Skills documents. These includes some games and other units that are not part of our curriculum at present but are included so that any future changes to our curriculum maintain a broad balance of skills being developed.

We deliver our PE lessons using the Complete PE Scheme. Teachers can access the detailed planning from the school’s interactive curriculum map held on the Complete PE website. Each child in the school will be taught PE in their classes twice a week. We endeavour to maximise the time that children are active during these lessons. These lessons may be delivered by their class teacher, another teacher or a PE specialist Teacher. This enables our staff to learn from each other’s expertise and to give children a wide range of experiences.

Impact

Our children develop their personal qualities such as resilience, integrity, co-operation, decision making and problem solving skills through their PE and other subjects. They gain confidence in their physical abilities, and achieve their personal best in terms of skills, tactical awareness, agility, and fitness. They are equipped to make the most of their continuing education. We hope our children grow into adults who lead healthy and active lives, participating in activities that develop their own personal skills, fitness and well-being, and/or being involved in sports and activities with others in local teams and organisations.
